Background:

Our local movie theater, Stratford Square Century Theatres, has been a cherished part of our community for decades. It has provided countless memories, entertainment, and a sense of unity. Unfortunately, there are plans to demolish this cinema treasure, alongside Stratford Square Mall in Bloomingdale, IL. Demolition is planned for late Summer 2024.
We believe that preserving this historic building is essential for our community’s cultural heritage. It was first opened in March 1981, renovations have been made, but has been closed since 2022. 

We are raising the voices of our community to request the preservation and restoration of Stratford Century Theatres! This would pave the way for a lasting legacy for the future generations, without erasing all of our cherished  memories of Stratford Square Mall. 

Why It Matters:

Community Hub: The theatre isn’t just a place to watch movies; it’s a gathering spot for friends, families, and neighbors. It’s where we celebrate birthdays, special events, enjoy date nights, and create lasting memories. It also has an arcade inside! ✨

Economic Impact: The theatre contributes to our local economy by providing jobs, attracting visitors, and supporting nearby businesses. 

Cultural Significance: The architecture, design, and history of the theater hold immense value. Losing it would be a blow to our community’s reputation.

Alternative Uses: Rather than demolition, let’s explore the possibility of preserving this precious gem of Stratford Square Mall, and strengthen its architectural outlay. They could use a new theatre tenant for the property and build additional space for an Arts Venue. There are some minor maintenance and repairs required to the venue that are necessary. 
They would need to accommodate an entry from the outside, and create a new facade to attract visitors. 

This cinema opened March 9, 1981, and is located inside the Stratford Square Mall. It closed due to COVID restrictions in Jan. 2022.  

A luxury 16-screen Century Theatre Cineplex is located at the mall complete with stadium seating, digital projectors and 4 3D capable screens. 

 

 

Our Request:

We, the undersigned, urge the city council, developers, and stakeholders to reconsider the demolition plans for Century Theatre. Instead, let’s work together to find a solution that preserves this historic establishment for future generations, if feasible.
