The Issue

It was a night that forever changed our lives. The brutal, senseless murders of Elizabeth, Brittany, and Connor - my nephew and niece, my brother's only children - continue to reverberate through every moment of our existence. Carillo Dean, the man responsible for this unimaginable act of violence, was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without parole. Now, after only 16 years, he is up for parole under Virginia's geriatric parole option...a consideration that seeks to undermine the gravity of the horrific crime he committed.

The statistics related to parole of murderers are chilling. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, approximately 1.2% of parolees commit homicide within three years of release (source: U.S. Department of Justice). This potential risk, combined with the irreplaceable loss inflicted upon our family by Dean's actions, should forever exclude him from any possibility of release.

This was a plea deal to not seek the death penalty in exchange for 3 life sentences with no chance for parole. Yet here we are only 16 years later..

We urge the parole board and all relevant authorities to deny any potential parole to Carillo Dean. We ask that you honor our painful loss and safeguard our community by holding firm on his original sentence of life without parole and three consecutive life sentences withiut parole. Please stand with us in preventing another potentially devastating act of violence by signing this petition.
