As a social worker, I confront the harsh realities of the cost of living crisis every day, not just for the individuals I work with, but also for myself and my colleagues. Social work is a complex, highly stressful role that already struggles to attract the necessary numbers due to the demands, pressures, and sacrifices in personal life. In this context, Social Work England is proposing to raise our registration fees from £90 to £120 annually, with an additional increase of 1.85% each subsequent year until 2029. This proposal not only adds financial stress to us, social workers, who are also weathering the cost of living crisis, but potentially deters aspiring social workers from entering this essential field. We understand the need for a funding source, but it should not come at the expense of the very people dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable.
