The Issue

As a staple part of my livelihood and that of many others, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is instrumental in ensuring we have food on our tables, even in the direst of circumstances. Of late, there is a looming ban on the purchase of 'junk food' with SNAP benefits. Not only does this infringe upon our freedom of personal choice, but it also hinders our capacity to celebrate special moments with our loved ones.

Imagine a child’s birthday or a special event when the only affordable way to get a cake, a sweet treat, or any celebratory meal is through SNAP. A ban on so-called 'junk food' robs us of these joys and imposes someone else's definition of nutritional value on our lives. It’s necessary to underline here that we are not advocating for an unhealthy lifestyle. Our plea is simply for choice.

Various SNAP beneficiaries, myself included, cannot afford food without this support. To decide on our behalf what we should and shouldn't eat is grossly unfair, especially when such decisions are tied to our ability to make both ends meet. According to the USDA, more than 38 million people in the United States relied on SNAP in 2019, highlighting its essential role in our societal fabric.

Upholding human dignity must be central to the administration of SNAP benefits. This includes respecting personal freedom of choice, even when it comes to food. Join us in voicing opposition against the ban on 'junk food' from SNAP benefits. Your signature can help ensure that millions can afford to celebrate life's special moments, enjoy a simple treat, and most importantly, retain autonomy over their food choices.
