Block’s Law: Require mandatory diagnostic testing after ectopic pregnancies.
The Issue
At 22 years old, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my first fallopian tube due to an ectopic pregnancy. But it didn’t end there. At 24, I suffered not just one, but two additional ectopic pregnancies, robbing me of both my fallopian tubes and devastatingly, my fertility. After a long and grueling legal battle, my case was finally heard in the Supreme Court in Kings County, where I emerged victorious. But no victory can return what I've lost. My deepest wish now is to prevent such tragedies from happening to any other women.
Ectopic pregnancies are indeed rare, but once a woman has experienced one, her risk of having another skyrockets to nearly 30%. Despite this significant increase in risk, many women aren't provided with adequate diagnostic testing before being advised to try for another pregnancy. This lack of preventive care can lead to devastating physical, emotional, and financial outcomes, just as it did for me.
The solution to this problem is clear: require mandatory diagnostic testing for women who have faced ectopic pregnancies resulting in rupture before they are cleared to resume attempts at pregnancy. By implementing routine diagnostics, we can identify and mitigate the risks, preserving the health and fertility of countless women who may otherwise face repeated ectopic pregnancies.
Studies have shown that early detection and timely management of potential complications in high-risk individuals can drastically reduce the incidence of recurrent ectopic pregnancies. Diagnostic tests, such as transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests to measure hCG levels, are effective tools that healthcare providers can use to identify anomalies in potential pregnancies post-ectopic incidents.
By supporting this petition, we urge healthcare policymakers, medical boards, and insurance companies to recognize the critical need for mandatory diagnostic testing in these high-risk scenarios. Let's ensure that no woman has to endure unnecessary loss due to preventable complications.
Please sign this petition to advocate for mandatory diagnostic testing for women who have experienced a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Together, we can push for a change that will protect women's health and fertility for generations to come.
