Block EKPC from Taking Berea College Forest Land

Block EKPC from Taking Berea College Forest Land
The Issue
The Berea College Forest was what drew me to the area and it is an invaluable asset to us and the community for its role in ecotourism, conservation, education, and protection of watersheds including the diverse local flora and fauna. The rich biodiversity and serene landscape draw visitors and residents alike, fostering an appreciation for the natural world while providing educational opportunities for students and researchers from Berea College and beyond.
East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) threatens this vital sanctuary by proposing to seize a portion of the forest to construct a high-voltage electric transmission line. This line is intended to serve Madison County and surrounding areas, yet it poses a critical risk to the unique ecological balance and environmental health of the Berea College Forest.
The significance of this forest cannot be overstated. It not only acts as an essential green space for local wildlife but also contributes to the community’s identity and economy. Ecotourism generated by the forest has brought considerable attention and revenue, supporting local businesses and fostering sustainable tourism that respects and preserves our precious natural resources.
Removing parts of the forest for industrial purposes undermines years of committed conservation efforts. The environmental impact can be devastating, threatening endangered species, disrupting water quality, and diminishing air purity. The forest’s pristine nature is paramount to educational programs focused on ecology and environmental stewardship, programs that would suffer greatly from this disruption.
Alternative solutions exist that could accommodate EKPC's infrastructure needs while sparing the forest. The development of renewable energy sources or altering the proposed transmission line route to bypass the forest are viable paths that could protect this indispensable resource.
The forest attracted many of us to Berea, fueling our passion for conservation and commitment to maintaining natural spaces for future generations. Safeguarding it is imperative.
Sign this petition to urge state and local government representatives, along with the East Kentucky Power Cooperative, to reconsider their plans and find a solution that respects both the environment and community well-being. Together, we can protect the Berea College Forest from destruction.
