Block data center development in Clarendon County, SC
The Issue
Clarendon County is at a crossroads. A proposed 15-megawatt data center is being considered for an industrial park in our county, and local officials are already discussing how to regulate future data center development.
We believe the answer is simple: Clarendon County should not allow data centers in our community!
Data centers place enormous demands on electrical infrastructure, consume significant resources, and can permanently alter the character of rural communities. Residents have already voiced concerns about potential impacts on power costs, water resources, noise, environmental quality, and public health.
While supporters point to a limited number of jobs and economic benefits, we believe those benefits do not outweigh the risks to the families, farms, businesses, and natural resources that make Clarendon County a special place to live. The county has acknowledged that it lacks sufficient safeguards and is currently considering a moratorium while regulations are studied.
We call on the Clarendon County Council and county officials to:
-Reject the proposed data center project.
-Prohibit future data center development within Clarendon County.
-Protect our water, land, and infrastructure from industrial-scale technology projects.
-Preserve the rural character and quality of life that residents value.
-Prioritize development that creates sustainable local benefits without placing additional burdens on county resources.
This petition is a message from residents and concerned citizens: Clarendon County is not the place for data centers.
By signing this petition, you join me in protecting Clarendon County against this imminent threat. Together, we can make our voices heard and ensure that our community's needs and values take precedence over industrial interests.
