YOUR COMMUNITY DEMANDS A SAFE, COMPASSIONATE NO KILL POLICY

•  *Blacktown pound is the largest impounding facility, in Australia’s largest city.
•  *Blacktown Council is one of the largest councils in Australia’s largest city.
•  *Blacktown Council makes millions of dollar profit, every year.
•  *Blacktown Council kills community pets – from its own local government area and the   ones it contracts to from other councils.

 The Blacktown City Council profits while it transfers the financial & emotional burden of saving pets to beleaguered charities and members of the public from all over the country.

•  *Blacktown Pounds direct adoption rate for dogs has gone DOWN in the last 3 years.
•  *Blacktown pound relies almost entirely on rescues to save unreclaimed dogs; that is unsustainable and will lead to increased killing in the future.
•  *The pound has proven No Kill for dogs is possible – i.e. a live rehoming rate of over 10%, without any public risk.
•  *Blacktown Pounds direct adoption rate for cats has gone up by just 1% - yes just 1% in years! (while it slaughters most of them).

 Almost every increase in rehoming has been done by private individuals and very poor charity groups who beg the public for money to help prevent killing.

 With a combined population coming up to 800,000, the pound has the safe capacity for just 100 animals; they force more than 8,000 impounds into the facility every year.

They are understaffed for the number of pets they care for and this results in situations that utterly deplorable and traumatising for their staff.

Pets are attacked and killed in their cells by other pets they are forced to share with that they have never met before, disease spreads killing cats & kittens and almost no pets get the amount of attention or exercise required by law.

 Council causes overcrowding, profits from overcrowding, and then kills because of the overcrowding.

•  If the council does not change its current model it will keep killing family pets.
•  If the council directly rehomed more pets, the council could make hundreds of thousands of dollars and the pound could fund its own improvements.
•  The council could run a profitable animal welfare centre, with a vet onsite, training classes, behaviour modification and a proper adoption centre (This could include mass, low cost or free, community desexing for cats).

 Blacktown City Council is now either killing pets for convenience or when they are not it is because they keep threatening to kill them and the public is forced to pay to save them!
