COAL IS THE ANSWER – TO POWERING VIC AUST NOW - WILL FOR NEXT 20 YEARS-SCRAP THE RENEWABLES DELUSION
The indisputable answer to Victoria’s, electricity requirements is staring everybody in the face. The fact is that Brown Coal Fired power stations, have been providing at least 50% and up to 75% of Victoria’s baseload power, every day 24/7, this year. And can continue to do so for the next 20 years or more.
As a fact, from the Australian Energy Market Operators Dashboard. 26th June 2026. 2.55pm. Victoria, Battery 0%, Brown coal 76%, gas 5%, hydro 7% solar 12%, wind 0%.
A further fact is that, if the current brown coal fired power stations. Low Yang A, Loy Yang B and Yallourn W, were fully maintained and supplemented by a further new High Efficiency, Low Emissions (HELE) coal fired power station. (The same as the two large lignite (brown-coal) units, built in Neurath, Germany). Then, the four brown coal fired power stations, could provide 90% of Victoria’s baseload, electricity requirements 24/7. With current gas and hydro power stations, making up the last 10% as it fluctuates with demand.
Victoria, has at least 200 years of Brown Coal reserves in the Gippsland Basin/Latrobe Valley. The coal is owned by the State (people) of Victoria. And as its burning, would be providing electricity for the benefit of the people of Victoria, the State, could supply the coal to the power stations, without charging a Royalty. (At the present time ChatGPT calculates that the royalty charged by the Victorian Govt is adding $3 per MWh to the cost of Victorian Electricity).
ChatGPT, further estimates Loy Yang A could produce electricity for $30MWh, 24/7. Compared to the ‘Casino like’ fluctuating price as presently is the way electricity is calculated in Victoria. Varying between $213MWh 9.15am 26/6/26. $99MWh at 3.20pm on 1/8/26 and 10.20am minus -$1.15MWh (the generator has to pay the Grid for taking the electricity, or supplying at a loss). The AEMO reading 3/8/26, 10.20am. Victoria, Battery 2%, Brown coal 47%, gas 0%, hydro 0% solar 18%, wind 33%. With the AEMO figures, I’m at a loss as to how a price of -$1.15 is arrived at. The price is certainly not being set with the best interests of Victorians in mind.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT WOULD MAKE TO THE COST OF LIVING AND BOOST TO THE ECONOMY OF VICTORIA IF THE COST OF ELECTRICITY COULD BE GUARANTEED TO BE $50MWh FOR 24/7, EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR.
I will deal with the implications, that a move to power Victoria with coal, will have for the Climate Change/Emissions Reduction Industry and the coming Victorian Elections in coming updates.
As coal continues to provide, over 50% of the electricity to the Grid: OUR PETITION TO STOP THE CLOSURE OF ALL THE AUSTRALIAN COAL FIRED POWER STATIONS AND TO KEEP THEM RUNNING IS THE ONE OPTION THAT MUST BE ADOPTED BY ALL POLITICAL PARTIES.
This includes Eraring NOW 2029, Yallourn NOW 2032), Bayswater in 2033, with Loyang A in 2045 and all other coal fired power stations.
And no consideration of them being closed be considered until assured supplies of base load electricity 24/7 is available from coal, gas or uranium powered generators. Even if this requires the coal fired generators be compulsory acquired by the relevant Government, in the National interest and to maintain the supply of base load electricity 24/7 that is essential to STOP the Grid from collapsing.

Particularly at 7pm and 7am (Or a time that suits you?) watch (and record) the mix of coal, gas hydro, batteries, solar and wind generation and the prices per MWh for each State on the AEMO dashboard.
Example: Eastern States 24/06/26 5.55.pm AEST.. Batteries 12%, Biomass 0%, Black Coal 38% Brown Coal 13%, Gas 18%, Hydro 16% Diesel 0% Solar 0%, Wind 2%. 4.55pm, coming into a peak time when solar is just entering its daily 17 hour, sunshine drought and wind is pottering along (in all States, it is in single figures), with no guarantee that a wind drought, might not be around the corner.
Meanwhile our coal fired generators are the backbone of the Grid. 24/6/26 5.55pm AEST. In NSW coal is producing 65% Solar 0%, Wind 1%, Qld coal 56%, solar 0% wind 4% Vic Brown coal 53%, solar 0%, wind 2%. SA batteries 12%, gas 77%, diesel 3% solar 0%, wind 8% and Tas hydro 94%, wind 2%.
WITHOUT COAL AUSTRALIA WOULD BE BLACKED OUT.
AND THE PRICES GENERATORS ARE RECEIVING VARIES WIDELY. As shown by these statistics what the generators are receiving for their Grid electricity. 22/6/26 4.55pm AESDST. In Qld the generators are receiving $43MWh. NSW is being paid $198Mwh. SA is paying $312MWh Vic is paying $188MWh and Tas is paying $112MWh.
