On Thursday the 17th of October, a severe dust storm blew through the Broken Hill area, and blew away the fantasy that the $millions spent on the Renewables would save the day. The result of the storm was that seven towers in the HV Transmission line, were blown down and it appears the dust may have stopped the Solar Farm from generating? The Wind Farm was unreliable as usual and the Battery was flat. Broken Hill has two backup Diesel generators, but one was out of service with some mechanical problems and the other overheated and shut down, because the demand was to great.
The result is that some 12,000 residents of Broken Hill and the surrounding towns of Tibooburra, Wilcannia, Menindee and White Cliffs. Have been without a power supply for five days, with rolling blackouts extending up to ten days or more.
There had been $650m invested Renewable Factories in Broken Hill in a 25km radius of the City. Which consists of. 1. The 200MW Silverton Wind Farm. 2. The 53MW Broken Hill Solar Farm and. 3. The 50MW Big Battery. All of which was meant to make Broken Hill, a self contained Renewable Energy Island. In the event that the HV Transmission line connecting it to the Grid was cut.
$650M COMPLETELY WASTED. IN FUTURE IT MAY MEAN A SMALL MODULAR NUCLEAR REACTOR, BUT IN THE MEANTIME KEEP THE DIESEL GOING.
THE DISASTER IN BROKEN HILL, IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHAT IS VERY LIKELY TO HAPPEN, IF THE POLITICAL CLASS CONTINUE WITH THEIR OBSESSION TO TRANSITION TO HAVING RENEWABLES MAKE UP 82% OF OUR GENERATING CAPACITY.
IT WILL ONLY TAKE AN EAST COAST WIND DROUGHT CONTINUING RIGHT THROUGH THE NIGHT TO SEE A BROKEN HILL DISASTER ON A NATIONAL SCALE. WITH WIDESPREAD BLACKOUTS, POWER RATIONING AND AUSTRALIA BECOME A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.
WE NEED TO TAKE HEED OF THE WARNING SIGNS AND NOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE. WE MUST RAMP THE PROMOTION OF OUR PETITION NOW TO KEEP OUR COAL FIRED GENERATORS GOING.
To restate our Petition is, (beginning with Liddell which closed in April 2023, Eraring in 2025, Yallourn in (2032 now 2028), Bayswater in 2033, with Loyang A in 2045). AND THAT NONE OF THESE COAL FIRED POWER STATIONS BE DEMOLISHED AFTER IT IS CLOSED, BUT BE MOTHBALLED, SO IT CAN BE RESTARTED IN THE EVENT, THAT A SHORTAGE OF ELECTRICAL GENERATION REQUIRES IT TO BE RESTARTED. Particularly at 7pm and 7am (Or a time that suits you?) watch (and record) the mix of coal, gas hydro, batteries, solar and wind generation and the prices per MWh for each State on the AEMO dashboard.
Example: Eastern States 10th October 2024 8.05pm AEST. Batteries 1%, Biomass 0%, Black Coal 46% Brown Coal 15%, Gas 6%, Hydro 16% Diesel 0% Solar 0%, Wind 17%. 8.00pm a Peak Period, the Sun has set Solar is producing 0%, another 10 minutes and it will be zero and the wind 13% could at any time drop to 3% of 4%. Or in other words solar and winds contribution is worthless and double, triple or quadruple the number of solar panels and wind turbines the result is just the same. 82% Renewables with no Sun, no Wind equals no electricity generation, guarantees blackouts
To underline the importance of our coal fired generators. Coal is producing in NSW 79% Wind 5%, Qld coal 69%, wind 5% Vic Brown coal 60%, wind 27%. SA gas 12%, Wind 88% and Tas 76% hydro, wind 24%.
