In the previous update campaigning for the upcoming Queensland State election to be held on the October the 26th. Liberal Party leader David Crisafulli committed to running Queensland’s coal-fired power generators indefinitely, Mr Crisafulli said: “We need the baseload power that comes from those coal-fired power generators, we need that there,” he said.
On the other hand, the Queensland Labor Government led by Premier Steven Miles is relying on the proposed Pioneer-Burdekin pumped hydro project, near Mackay, to enable it to shut down the state’s five coal-fired power stations and reach its target of 80 per cent renewable energy by 2035.
A CERTAINTY TO END IN DISASTER
THIS IS WHY A PUMPED HYDRO PROJECT IS CERTAIN TO FAIL
1. A PUMPED HYDRO PROJECT PRODUCES ZERO ELECTRICITY ON ITS OWN IT IS JUST A GIANT BATTERY. That the alleged purpose is to store, low cost, excess electricity that is generated by wind and solar factories. This stored, low cost, electricity is to be discharged, (at a higher price) to meet demand when Solar and Wind Factories are not producing sufficient electricity to meet the needs of the Grid.
HOWEVER THERE IS SERIOUS DOUBT WHETHER THAT SURPLUS ELECTRIITY WIILL BE AVAILABLE BECAUSE: A. As Solar Factories only have fuel (Sunshine) available for a maximum of 8 hours a day to produce electricity and (with cloud and rain, sometimes much less), this means that on many days Solar Factories PRODUCE LITTLE OR NO ELECTRICITY. B. Wind Turbines are powered by a weather fuel the Wind. At 12am on any day, there is no certainty that the fuel tank will have any fuel available as the weather may be calm. Because they can only produce electricity, when the wind speed is between 12kms/hr and 90kms/hr. The industry reports that Wind Turbines only produce electricity on average for only 35% of their rated capacity or on average for eight hours per day. Wind Turbines can be becalmed for days at a time, producing no electricity. 2. THERE IS A HIGH LIKLEHOOD THAT THE PUMPED HYDRO PROJECT WILL HAVE NO ELECTRICITY TO RELEASE, BECAUSE OF A. THE REASON ABOVE THERE HAS BEEN NO CHEAP EXCESS ELECTRICITY. B. IT IS BEING RECHARGED. C. THERE IS A DROUGHT AND THERE IS INSUFFICIENT WATER.
3. The proposed Pioneer-Burdekin pumped hydro project, project is still being subjected to financial, engineering and environmental investigations and is yet to get government approvals or substantive funding. This underlines that our petition is, (beginning with Liddell which closed in April 2023, Eraring in 2025, Yallourn in (2032 now 2028), Bayswater in 2033, with Loyang A in 2045). AND THAT NONE OF THESE COAL FIRED POWER STATIONS BE DEMOLISHED AFTER IT IS CLOSED, BUT BE MOTHBALLED, SO IT CAN BE RESTARTED IN THE EVENT, THAT A SHORTAGE OF ELECTRICAL GENERATION REQUIRES IT TO BE RESTARTED. Particularly at 7pm and 7am (Or a time that suits you?) watch (and record) the mix of coal, gas hydro, batteries, solar and wind generation and the prices per MWh for each State on the AEMO dashboard.
Example: Eastern States 10th October 2024 8.05pm AEST. Batteries 1%, Biomass 0%, Black Coal 46% Brown Coal 15%, Gas 6%, Hydro 16% Diesel 0% Solar 0%, Wind 17%. 8.00pm a Peak Period, the Sun has set Solar is producing 0%, another 10 minutes and it will be zero and the wind 13% could at any time drop to 3% of 4%. Or in other words solar and winds contribution is worthless and double, triple or quadruple the number of solar panels and wind turbines the result is just the same. 82% Renewables with no Sun, no Wind equals no electricity generation, guarantees blackouts
To underline the importance of our coal fired generators. Coal is producing in NSW 79% Wind 5%, Qld coal 69%, wind 5% Vic Brown coal 60%, wind 27%. SA gas 12%, Wind 88% and Tas 76% hydro, wind 24%.
