Never in my lifetime have I seen homelessness so bad. In Melbourne, I am told there is a large number of homeless people in the streets, I am told every Victorian country town has a ‘tent city’. Front page in the Rural City of Wangaratta Victoria newspaper The Chronicle states, “the city has more than 600 people, experiencing homelessness’. What a terrible situation for Victorians to be in.
But while the ‘Transition to Unreliables’ is not completely responsible for this situation, their major contribution to extremely high electricity prices is a big contributor and if it continues it will only get worse.
And all the Federal and State Net Zero, Emission Reduction goals and Carbon emission limits on big polluters, are all causing a waste of money, effort, damage to agricultural land, the environment.
AND IT IS ALL FOR NOTHING. ZERO BENEFIT FOR AUSTRALIA, ZERO BENEFIT FOR THE WORLD’S TEMPERATURE. CHINA WILL REPLACE AUSTRALIA’S EMISSION REDUCTIONS IN AN HOUR.
That’s right! Because while Australia’s emissions of Co2 are approximately 1.3% of the World’s emissions at the same time China emits 30% of the World’s emissions and is still growing. Any reduction in Australia’s emissions will be quickly replaced by China’s emissions.
Making the situation worse is that Solar Panels are extremely inefficient having fuel (sunshine) for a maximum of eight hours a day (with some days much less!) And wind turbines are no better, it’s either too calm or too windy, so the Wind Industry says you can only rely on them to average about 35% of their rated capacity. And Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) don’t generate any electricity at all, only store it BESSs are very inefficient as Inverters are needed to convert AC current to DC current on the way into the BESS. And then Inverters are needed to convert DC current to AC current on the way out. This conversion sees a loss of 16% or more.
Then the whole lot has to be connected by very expensive (in cost and environmental damage) by High Voltage Transmission Lines paid for by the taxpayer.
Then everything Solar Panels, Wind Turbines, BESSs and HV Transmission have to be heavily subsidised (via our electricity bills) or they would be abandoned, because they would be unviable overnight.
Our current situation shows how reliant we are on coal: Eastern States 12th August 2024 4.25pm EST. Batteries 1%, Biomass 0%, Black Coal 47% Brown Coal 15%, Gas 10%, Hydro 5% Diesel 0% Solar 9%, Wind 13%. COAL IS PROVIDING 62% OF THE GRID’S REQUIREMENT
This again underlines how important it is that (beginning with Liddell which closed in April 2023, Eraring in 2025, Yallourn in (2032 now 2028), Bayswater in 2033, with Loyang A in 2045). AND THAT NONE OF THESE COAL FIRED POWER STATIONS BE DEMOLISHED AFTER IT IS CLOSED, BUT BE MOTHBALLED, SO IT CAN BE RESTARTED IN THE EVENT, THAT A SHORTAGE OF ELECTRICAL GENERATION REQUIRES IT TO BE RESTARTED. Even if this requires the coal fired generators be compulsory acquired by the relevant Government, in the National interest.
May I strongly urge all business owners, large and small. CEO’s Managers, those in charge of aged care homes, and other public institutions, everyone in a position of management. Homeowners, etc. Reliable, low-cost power is essential. Blackouts are a diabolically, serious issue. Talk with your management, boards, staff about how it will affect your business.
The ACT Government claims that they are totally renewable energy powered. The ACT Government is deluding themselves and doesn’t realise how wrong they are. As all their electricity comes from the NSW Grid. It is more likely to be anywhere between 60% to 80% fossil fuels and only 20% to 30% unreliables, with the damage unreliables are doing to Rural Australia the whole project is a disaster.

Particularly at 7pm and 7am (Or a time that suits you?) watch (and record) the mix of coal, gas hydro, batteries, solar and wind generation and the prices per MWh for each State on the AEMO dashboard.
Example: Eastern States 12th August 2024 4.25pm EST. Batteries 1%, Biomass 0%, Black Coal 47% Brown Coal 15%, Gas 10%, Hydro 5% Diesel 0% Solar 9%, Wind 13%. 4.25pm coming to a a Peak Period, a sunny day and Solar is only producing 9%, another hour it will be zero and the wind unreliable. UNRELIABLES SHOULD NEVER BE USED TO POWER A MODERN ECONOMY.
