Close Northwestern and Keep Our Curriculum, Our Teachers and Our Teams
The Issue
As many of you in the district may or may not know, the School Board will be voting on Thursday at 7:30 PM at the high school Auditorium as to whether or not to furlough several teachers within the district in order to allocate more funds to refurbish Northwestern Primary School and build a new athletic complex.
If the district can manage to close NW for a year during construction, then it should do so permanently. Eight million dollars will not be enough to remodel a school, upgrade its technology infrastructure and no longer make it a health hazard (as it is full of asbestos and mold). If anyone believes that this remodeling can be done with eight million dollars, they need to seek a second opinion from experts in this field. The Board needs to close Northwestern’s doors in June and walk away from it, sell it, and get rid of it. They should not put another dime in to that money pit.
Take funding and money and put it back in to the curriculum, back with the students, teachers and athletics. The School Board and the Superintendent need to build up the trust of the community and the district staff instead of continually breaking it down.
In order to retain families in the district and draw in new ones, this district must remain competitive BOTH academically and athletically. The School Board is considering cutting the very programs and the employees that are the district’s SELLING POINTS: Multiple Foreign languages; IT/ Computer and Business courses; Drivers Education; Special Education Programs and support; Middle School athletic teams; Athletic Trainers; Coaches and even full-day kindergarten.
We are asking that the School Board step back, re-evaluate the situation and hear what the community is saying: CLOSE Northwestern Primary School, keep our CURRICULUM, keep our TEACHERS and keep our TEAMS!
