The use of styrofoam in our world today is enormously devastating to our planet and we need to take action NOW. One simple step is to ban the use of styrofoam containers at a local restaurant called Biscuits Café located here in Portland, Oregon. Although the effects of this ban may not dramatically affect you, we still need to take action and we need to take action today. Biscuits Café is a lovely local restaurant where they have delicious breakfast and lunch options, but the use of their styrofoam containers is damaging the environment. The making of styrofoam releases more than 50 chemical byproducts into the atmosphere, contaminating the air, water, and communities who live near these factories. As most know, styrofoam does not decompose and as a result, ends up in streams, rivers, and the ocean, polluting the ecosystem it surrounds. A common way to physically discompose the styrofoam is to burn it, but the chemicals within the styrofoam then are released into the atmosphere, polluting the planet even more. I have always cared for the environment and I cannot just sit by and watch as our planet goes up in flames, physically and metaphorically. We need to take action now in order for our planet to survive. Although the ban of styrofoam containers at a restaurant may seem small, if we do not stand up and help our environment, the use of styrofoam will continue to be a problem and will continue to harm the planet. By using recycled containers instead of styrofoam containers, the containers will be decomposable, and the amount of harm towards the environment will decrease. It may seem like a fractional decrease of harm, but it is a decrease that will create a chain reaction of actions taken, inspiring others to do their part to help the environment.
