Birth Sanctuary Gainesville

The Issue

Birth Sanctuary Gainesville is set to be Alabama's first midwifery-owned and Black-led freestanding birth center.

Dr. Stephanie Mitchell DNP, CNM, CPM is a fierce activist and leader in our community.

Alabamas department of health is attempting to block the birth center by proposing new rules and regulations in the state. This decision is rooted in racism and oppression. This is an attack on Black birthing bodies and Black providers that are creating solutions to the morbidity and mortality epidemic in the United States. These barriers continue to reinforce the fact that this is not about access to healthcare for pregnant people or about better outcomes for birthing families. It's about power and sustaining racist foundations.
