Temporary bus lanes on Bristol Road South are causing confusion and danger
The Issue
The temporary bus lanes on the A38 Bristol Road South are causing confusion and danger to all road users and need to be reconsidered.
We the undersigned residents of Bournville, Cotteridge, Weoley and Selly Oak areas of Birmingham express our serious concerns about the introduction of the new temporary bus lanes on the A38 Bristol Rd South.
We recognize the need to encourage active travel in our communities and increase the number of safe walking and cycling routes in our area.
However, we believe that the experimental traffic alteration that has been introduced on the A38 Bristol Road South is dangerous to drivers and cyclists alike.
We note that:
- there was inadequate consultation on the introduction of the scheme
- the scheme has been implemented in a haphazard and confusing way with no clear signage to guide road users
- it creates serious safety issues at the junctions of Bournville Lane, Middle Park Road, Witherford Way, Cob Lane and Hole Lane, as well as the surrounding areas
- the bus traffic has at no time been delayed between Northfield and Selly Oak by traffic build-ups even at peak times.
Therefore, we ask the council to:
- reconsider this temporary road alteration and remove the bus lanes on the Bristol Road South between Selly Oak and Northfield
- enhance the existing shared-use footways that run alongside the Bristol Road between Selly Oak and Northfield to create a segregated cycle route between Northfield and the City Centre linking into the existing Blue Route at the University.
