It's great that the petition that you have signed is still being picked up by the media, as shown by this recent article in the Birmingham Mail (see Reason 4). The council have listened and a new park is now in their plans for a section of the Smithfield site. However as we have previously pointed out, the park is currently too small (no bigger than the Cathedral Green). Our vision is for Birmingham to have a large landscaped urban park of true global significance on this site, which is located in the heart of the city, right next to the Bullring. The good news is that a larger park could contain many of the attractions that the council actually wants for the site (see Reason 2 in the article) such as museums, markets, housing and open spaces for concerts. So what the council needs to do is to consider the park as a template for the whole site in which attractions are placed, rather than something squeezed in as an afterthought. A model for this approach is the recently opened Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London (see: http://www.queenelizabetholympicpark.co.uk). If you agree that that a much larger park than the one proposed is required for our city, please spread the word to get more people to sign the petition and add their comments, which is still active. You can also follow us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/citypark4brum) and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/CityPark4Brum/). Finally thank you again for your support. Over 2800 people have signed the petition so far and without you, there would have been no new green space and no new park planned for our city centre. Now we just need to make it larger!
