Reduce Condom Tax, Reduce HIV Numbers !

Reduce Condom Tax, Reduce HIV Numbers !
The Issue
In May 2017, there were 1,098 new HIV positive individuals reported to the HIV/AIDS Registry Of The Philippines (HARP), leading to a 48% increase compared to the same period last year (741) and also the highest recorded cases ever since 1984.
Most (95%) were male. The median age was 28 years old (age range: 2 year - 67 years) with more than half belong to the 25 - 34 year age group and 30% were youth, aged 15-24 years.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). One of the main reasons of infection is through the sharing of certain body fluids (Semen, Blood, Rectal Fluids, Vaginal Fluids, Breastmilk). With only after two - four weeks of infection you experience symptoms of HIV, possibly causing it to further spread to others without the individual knowing or taking a test for it.
People use condoms as physical barriers that reduce risk of a sexual exposure to HIV due to its material that does not allow HIV to pass through it. This makes condoms a highly effective strategy to reduce the risk of HIV transmission when used consistently and correctly. these types of average, run out of the mill condoms costs you about PHP 100 - 200.
With this amount, people tend to not use condoms at all as they think that it is only a waste of money and they can use other conventional methods whenever having sexual intercourse. Condoms are not just used to protect the individuals from unwanted pregnancy but to also protect themselves from possible HIV infection.
Push the government to amend the Philippines' 20-year-old AIDS law, promote condom use as well as reduce it's VAT ( Value Added Tax ) by signing this petition, resulting in a possible decrease in infection rate as well as an increase in usage of condoms.
