The principal of Binghamton High School, Kevin Richman, has split lunch into 3 different periods. Freshmen are no longer allowed off of the campus and are separate from other grades. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors can still hang out together, but not with the freshmen. Rather than keeping lunch as one period, students are now told when to go to lunch. Their schedule either has it for 5th period (freshmen and chorus/band members only), 6th period, or 7th period. I feel that this gives freshmen the wrong ideas about high school and makes them think older students are not to be associated with and that Freshman Friday is a recurring issue (which it's not as common as old movies made it look, but you get my point). It also messes with club schedules, as many clubs run during lunch. Now that students are no longer unified, clubs cannot run effectively and people cannot see all of their friends or relatives due to lunches being scheduled at different times. The schedule will also cause more skipping because people can't see their friends and family. Also, the administration may or may not have thought about this, but if people can't fight during lunch they'll find another time to do it, so fighting will not decrease. This new lunch is a short term solution to a long term issue that simply will not work. If anyone else thinks this new lunch is stupid/messed up, feel free to sign and share this.
