Land that once was Everglades, is now owned by sugar farms who, for years back pumped into Lake Okeechobee. The nutrients in these fertilizers, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen are responsible for producing a toxic bloom of blue green algae. The Army Corp of engineers releases this toxic water into the Caloosahatchee and the St Lucie river, killing everything in site. We are combating a tremendous red tide bloom which is killing everything and being fed by nutrient laden blue green algae. There are plans going into action to rehab the dyke and send this water south, and also to build two new reservoirs east and west of the Lake. But we need action now! We need to call for an immediate ban on fertilizers containing phosphorus and nitrogen! This problem reaches far beyond one contributor. A fertlizer ban would greatly reduce the nutrients being fed into Lake Okeechobee from agriculture and residential runoff. We are seeing endangered species wash up dead on our shores in alarming numbers! We are experiencing respiratory, and skin issues. Our tourism business has dropped tremendously in a very short amount of time. We need action now!
