Thank you again for spreading the word on behalf of the students of Tennessee.
I have read many great comments with this petition, and hope that you each get a chance to read them as well. Many comments have spoken to the multitude of problems with TNReady. Several of the comments are from students, and they are great. One comment from a parent addresses the fact that Comissioner McQueen's own children do not take the TNReady test. If I had to sum up the teacher comments, it would be.....please let us spend the rest of the year TEACHING!
Final thoughts regarding TNReady and recent statements made by the Tennessee Department of Education. There has been a PR campaign by the state to let parents know that they are "listening" and will be reducing test time. The net reduction that is confirmed as of this point is 50 minutes (most of Part 1 Math questions will be removed, but any other reductions have been extremely vague and can not be considered in a discussion). It should be known that this reduction was already planned before Part 1 was even adminstered. It had NOTHING to do with the state reacting to parent concerns. So next year, my second-oldest daughter will be required to take over 10 hours of standardized state tests. That is still more time than an ACT, SAT, and a GRE combined!
I think that the state should listen to the concerned parents and educators across Tennessee. The wonderful people signing this petition have made their request clear. When Commissioner McQueen, the state legislative body, and/or Governor Haslam cancel Part 2 of TNReady, then the state can say they listened and responded!
