Put and end to the jet skiers in Snapper Creek Canal
Put and end to the jet skiers in Snapper Creek Canal
The Issue
Comments below from fellow residents..I am tired of the noise, trash, and disruption of peace from these jet skiers all the time.
This is a residential neighborhood and not a recreational area for watersports.
The only way anything will get accomplished is by being a pain in the ass to our local commissioner. The greasy wheel gets the oil. I’m tired of hearing those damn jet ski’s racing down the canal all weekend (and I own a jet ski). That boat ramp was created decades ago and intended for very small boats. We are now in 2018 and there are Jet ski’s with over 300 horsepower and capable of doing 80mph+. This is a residential area not a race track. New residents pay a crap load of property taxes to county and should not take no for an answer. This canal also runs the City of South Miami, Pinecrest, and Coral Gables and I’m pretty sure this crap doesn’t happen there.
We have had numerous canal-related communications with county commissioners and administrators, Miami-Dade police administrators, the Florida Marine Patrol, and South Florida Water Management folks("The Canal People") concerning:
--hormone poisoned human males on jet skies chasing ducks
--boat operators not slowing to 5 mph when within the legally specified (I forgot what that was, but I think 50 or 100 ft) proximity of a bridge
--watercraft operators not paying attention to posted manatee zones.
--jet ski operators using the canal as a race course.
The good new. The bottom line: the C2 Canal along its entire length is already a no wake zone, given its width. It is not wide enough for a powered craft to be far enough from one shore to legally generate a wake, as by that point it is already too close to the opposite side of the canal.
The bad news: there is no money to support enforcement of the no wake requirement.
One bit of sage advice offered us: wait until a death or two from unsafe operation. We all know what is coming: a headless jet skier or headless boater floating under a bridge. Till then: no money means no enforcement.
Personally, we have not seen in the canal refuse/garbage generated by canal users.
