We are calling for a RALLY in front of the Park Savoy on Sunday, May 6th at 1:45 We must call attention to the fact that there were 674 arrests in the homeless shelter system in the first 3 months of 2018 (see link to story below) NY1: NYPD: 674 arrests at homeless shelters in first quarter of 2018 The proposed shelter at the Park Savoy is only planned with 2 low-level security officers, and no external cameras. Important talking points: The Park Savoy location is a dangerous place for an all-male homeless shelter; too much pedestrian traffic, too high a risk of crime and violence There is a plan to roll out 90 new shelters in the next 5 years, the city needs to re-evaluate their security plans and they should use exclusively DHS police officers, reporting to NYPD Affordable housing and supportive housing is the key to reducing homelessness, there is not enough being done to address a serious shortfall of supply The City's shelter program, through its incomplete and poorly planned execution, has created a new wave of violence and lawlessness - Shelter Violence. Just as the Park Savoy shelter plan was hidden from the residents who live beside it, so too was this increase in crime at city shelters. As citizens, we demand to be informed of potential dangers and we expect the city provide the protection it is charged with. For the neighborhoods that have already experienced this increase in crime, and for our own neighborhood yet to be exposed, we demand the proposed men's shelter at the Park Savoy Hotel be halted immediately while better examination of the security risks are studied and addressed.
