Lift the ban on ferret ownership in New York City.

Lift the ban on ferret ownership in New York City.
The Issue
In 1999 NYC Mayor Giuliani instituted a ban on the ownership of pet ferrets in New York City. Ferrets are still legal to house throughout the rest of New York state, but within the state's most vibrant city they are illegal. The ban was instated due to Giuliani's belief that pet ferrets could become independently colonized throughout New York, spreading rabies and mayhem throughout the city that never sleeps. A strange concept considering cats, dogs, and other domesticated animals commonly kept as pets are just as likely to be vectors for the rabies virus. Not to mention New York already requires that all pets receive rabies vaccinations. So why this specific crusade targeting ferrets? In the eyes of responsible ferret owners everywhere there is no justification for this ban. A bill aiming to lift the ban was even shot down recently in 2015 under current NYC mayor Bill de Blasio. I propose an immediate lift of this ban to allow any NYC resident, current or prospective, to enjoy the benefits of ferret ownership. A little background about me and why this cause is so near and dear to my heart. I'm a big animal lover and the proud pet parent of a great little ferret named HG Wells. He's five years old and is the best little buddy anyone could ask for. Ferrets are highly intelligent, fun, and feisty little mammals. And unlike the common misconception would have you think, ferrets are not rodents! They're funky little animals called mustelids, and have cousins like otters, weasels, and minks. So if anything, a rogue ferret or two may help exterminate any rodent problem that may be plaguing NYC. My sister has been a resident of NYC for the past four years and I plan on joining her, moving from my hometown in central Florida to Queens, New York. I'm about to take my exam to become a paramedic and my dream is to join FDNYs finest as a paramedic. But I can't make that dream a reality if this unnecessary ban continues. Please join me in sending a message to Mayor De Blasio, that the great city of New York will only be improved by the addition of these furry friends. Mayor De Blasio please right this wrong made before your term. You've done great things for NYC and I'm confident you'll see this is just another step in the right direction.
