The Issue

Underneath Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, there is a tunnel that was once used by the Long Island Rail Road. The tunnel under NYC is America's first subway ever. LIRR used the tunnel to shuttle people from Brooklyn and other parts of the city to the ferry docks for ships coming in to NYC. It operated for 17 years with trains bringing people back and forth between the ferry and the city. In 1848, one of LIRR's steam locomotives, the Hicksville, was retired. In 1853, the Long Island Railroad did some inspecting and declared that the Hicksville was "not worth repairing." In 1861, the Atlantic Avenue tunnel was sealed, and sealed inside it was the Hicksville. In 1979, a man named Bob Diamond heard that there may be a tunnel and a steam locomotive underneath Atlantic Ave. He went and got a map from the era and found a manhole at the entrance to the tunnel on the map. When he got to the location of the manhole, there was a manhole cover in the exact spot. He asked the city to remove the cover. He went down there and started tours. Until 2010, he operated tours of the tunnel. Bob received a certified letter saying that they are closing the tunnel again due to safety reasons, and he was kicked out of the tunnel. However, Bob did not find the gold he was looking for. That gold was the Hicksville. In January 2011, Brinkerhoff Environmental Services used an electromagnectic device and found under Atlantic Avenue that there was a large metal object right where the locomotive was said to be. The object was reported to be bigger than a pipeline and is an unusual reading for any Brooklyn street. They are not sure if it is the Hicksville, though. There is possibly a perfectly preserved 1836 wood burning steam locomotive under Atlantic Avenue, with little to no restoration work needed. This engine could go to the New York City Transit Museum or any other Rail Museum in the state of New York. All we need is city approval and some help removing the brick walls. If you want a piece of railway history to be saved, please sign our petition to get mayor Bill de Blasio and the city's approval to get the locomotive out of the tunnel.
