Let's Save the Monarch Butterfly - Get Illinois to Plant Native for Pollinators!
The Issue
UPDATE: Due to the support from YOU and other Change.org activists, Illinois State Senator Bill Cunningham filed a bill to the Illinois General Assembly to appropriate $25,000 to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for monarch habitat restoration! Read the bill's full description here: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=2240&GAID=15&GA=101&DocTypeID=SB&LegID=120820&SessionID=108
Later this spring, Senator Cunningham's Bill was incorporated into Illinois' Omnibus Budget Bill, which was passed into law! See the bill literature on page 318, Section 90 in the link below: http://ilga.gov/legislation/101/SB/PDF/10100SB0262enr.pdf

The monarch butterfly population has dropped 90% since 1996.
Monarch caterpillars ONLY eat milkweed, and monarch mothers ONLY lay their eggs on milkweed!
Milkweed (pictured above) is an Illinois native flower (Not a weed). This “weed” misconception has led to the eradication of most milkweed in the U.S.
Less milkweed means fewer monarchs.
75% of all flowers and 35% of all global food production (from Apples to Zucchini) depend on pollinators like butterflies and bees.
You can create change right now by signing this petition. In doing so, you support Illinois legislation...
- That milkweed seed should be spread on the sides of every Illinois roadway managed by IDOT (Illinois Department of Transportation)
- That Illinois farmers should use a portion of their unfarmable land to plant milkweed and other pollinator plants.
- That post-secondary schools receiving Illinois state funding should plant a small garden with native flowers/grasses and include native plants as part of their landscaping projects. Native gardens as small as 100 square feet (10 ft x 10 ft) provide enough food and habitat for pollinators.
