Bill A587 is a bill that attempts to solve a social problem with some of our most vulnerable members of society, children. This bill if passed is set to require all children that are deemed in cases that are necessary to require counseling for children who have witnessed domestic violence. The Perpetrator will also be required to pay for counseling for the child. Lastly, this will grant the non-violent parent custody of the child. If things stay the way they are currently children will not be required to get the professional help they cannot advocate for themselves for. This leaves a lifelong impact of social, psychological, and behavioral effects expressed internally and externally. More alarmingly this can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder which can cause lifelong health disparities. This long-term causes strain on our medical system as well as other structures.
