BIKE LANES FOR MYSTIC'S BASCULE BRIDGE

BIKE LANES FOR MYSTIC'S BASCULE BRIDGE
The Issue
Community support is needed to get CT Department of Transportation to install bike lanes on the Mystic Bascule Bridge. The perforated, smooth plates attached to the side of each travel lane would make cyclists safer by providing a stable surface out of vehicular traffic lanes. Currently, the rough, open grate surface is unnerving causing channeling of skinny bike tires. Cyclists often swerve to the narrow concrete strips in the auto lanes to provide a smoother surface. Having cars at your back as you try and travel the bridge is scary even for the most seasoned cyclist.
Providing separate safe and stable bike lanes will show that our community cares about all users of the bridge. More cyclists will lessen traffic and parking strains downtown. Cyclists also tend to spend more money due to their ability to linger longer. In the shadow of the historic Bridge's 100th anniversary celebration, we need to plan for the bridge's future providing access for all users.
A formal request was submitted to the CTDOT in May of 2022 along with specifications from the manufacturer, however they have blocked the request. Local Town Administrators and Traffic Authorities have come out in support of this safety upgrade. We are looking to have community support let CTDOT know we need this now.
