The proposed bike lane infrastructure (supported by North Sydney Council?) will remove a lane at the intersection of Yeo St and Wycombe Rd designed to allow traffic flow through into Cremorne and Mosman and allow heavy vehicles the required arc to turn left on to Wycombe Rd when travelling east along Yeo St. The lane on the opposite side of Yeo St mirrors this existing layout for the same reason!

  • With no turning lane the 263 bus (running 14-16 times a day since 1939) will have to drive into the oncoming traffic to turn successfully into the bus stop.
  • Removing a lane from the opposite side of Wycombe Rd will result in buses not being able to turn successfully into the bus stop they will block the entire intersection when turning not just Yeo St. Wycombe Rd will be blocked!
  • This will also block pedestrians.
  • Then on the south side of the intersection where cyclists, e-bike riders, scooter riders must combine with pedestrians to cross Wycombe Rd to continue along the bike lanes. I like to call this area the “Danger Zone!”.
“Lime E bikes” we have scattered everywhere weigh 43kg other brands can weigh from 18kg to 80kg. Scooters up to 40kg. With traditional bicycles weighing 7-10kg.
Now consider this common situation whether someone is in a motor vehicle or on a bike etc and from a distance they see the traffic light turn green or in this case the crossing sign turn green. What does human nature suggest will happen next? The motor vehicle operator and cyclist  accelerate but unlike the motor vehicle operator who does not have to reduce speed below the 50km/hr at the intersection the cyclist, e-bike riders and scooter riders must reduce speed at the shared zone prior to the crossing to 10km/hr!
  •  Taking the passing lane away on the opposite side of Wycombe Rd all buses turning left from Military Rd will block all other traffic while at the bus stop and this will obviously result in blocking all buses travelling along Military Rd.
  • All heavy vehicles will block the intersection attempting to turn!
  • All vehicles continuing along Yeo St will be blocked by vehicles turning left to access Military Rd!
  • Emergency vehicles in particular NSW FIRE 🔥 located on Yeo St since 1908 will be blocked. If NSW FIRE 🔥 venture into the oncoming traffic lane  to pass they may be trapped because oncoming traffic has no escape! Alternatively NSW FIRE 🔥 can attempt to manoeuvre through traffic on Yeo St south and Ben Boyd Rd and then Military Rd  to get to Wycombe Rd or take a 3km detour down Ben Boyd Rd on to Kurraba Rd then Wycombe Rd because there are no other close streets accessing Wycombe or Rangers Rd!
  • No vehicles except buses will be allowed to turn right at peak times so all other vehicles including other heavy vehicles will have a 3km detour or a risky U Turn!
  • Watson St (that runs on to Yeo St) is the only access point for ALL vehicles to Neutral Bay and Cremorne when coming from North Sydney and all other suburbs from the North West via Pacific Highway or the motorway!
  • Tampering with Yeo St would be negligent considering the facts.

2. The proposed bike lane infrastructure also has the parking lost from Yeo St put onto a narrow street (Barry St) and it turned one way.

  • Barry St like Yeo St has been designed to allow safe access to and from daycare centres and the Neutral Bay Public school that has just increased its capacity.
  • NSW FIRE 🔥 has presented the North Sydney Council with a report stating they oppose the changes because they will not be able to access Barry St if parking is on both sides that is a few hundred homes that will have to fend for themselves!
  • Turning Barry St one way will add more vehicles to the other busy daycare and school drop off access points!
  • Tampering with Barry St would be negligent considering the facts.

3. NSW FIRE 🔥 require the entire width of Yeo St to enter and exit from the Fire Station.

  • Tampering with the width of Yeo St would be negligent considering the facts.

4. Garbage trucks that use Cheal Lane to empty bins to houses and apartments weekly and many commercial properties daily will not be able to turn left from May Lane  onto Yeo Street without crossing into oncoming traffic. The May Lane exit onto Yeo Street is also the exit for the Barry St Carpark. The May Lane exit is also used daily by the Council.

  • Tampering with the width of Yeo St would be negligent considering the facts.

5. Harrison St. It must be noted that the plan has been changed for Harrison St. They planned to make it one way this was scrapped because of the obvious -Harrison St would solely empty onto Rangers Rd and then all inhabitants would have to use Yeo St at peak because no left turn at Rangers onto Military Rd. But now they are going to make Harrison St one way blocking off Rangers Rd completely for everyone accessing Military Rd off peak and therefore increase the traffic and pollution  at the Yeo St and Wycombe Rd intersection off peak!

  • Tampering with Harrison St is negligent considering the facts.

There are alternatives that will make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians and all other vehicles that have been missed by North Sydney Council for 30+ years!

  • Yeo St pedestrian crossing near Bydown St is not a safe pedestrian crossing the angle of impact is too low vehicles do not slow down very much going over it. It must be replaced.
  • Yeo St near Barry St a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights must be installed it is the gateway to the centre of Neutral Bay including Barry St Carpark and May Gibbs Place and the new plaza.
  • A trouble spot is the intersection of Yeo St and May Lane to resolve this 2-3 parking spaces should be removed. Removing these spaces along with the new crossing at Barry St calming traffic all vehicles can safely exit May Lane from apartments, businesses and Barry St Carpark.
