Revise the new Bedford High School Scheduling Policy-Drop/Add Policy without Penalty

Revise the new Bedford High School Scheduling Policy-Drop/Add Policy without Penalty

The Issue

Recent changes to the Bedford High School scheduling policy relating to the Drop/Add process (http://bhsprincipalhagensbulletin.blogspot.com/2015/06/schedule-process-update.html) will negatively impact our students' transcripts and impede their educational growth and future. Stringent measures were put into place without much consideration of ever-changing teenagers and the long-term impact they may have on their educational future.

This new policy that has no Drop/Add grace period at the start of the school year, thus permanently places a "Withdraw, Withdraw Pass or Withdraw Fail" on your child's transcript. The inability to make schedule changes does not embrace Bedford High School's Mission Statement which declares to support a passion for learning through dedication to educational excellence for all students and staff. Highlights of the mission emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, relevance and fostering habits of open inquiry.  Unfortunately, the new scheduling process handcuffs students to administrative policy rather than allowing them to embrace the true of core of the BHS mission statement.

Our hope is that BHS and BSD administration realize that further changes need to be made in order to keep the focus on the students to maintain a nurturing and engaging learning environment.

We appreciate you taking the time to understand the issue at hand.  Time is of the essence as this policy was recently revised, reissued and goes into effect immediately. We must act now for change!
