Mandatory Gender-Based Violence Training for SAPS Officials

The Issue

The SAPS is the first point of contact when citizens' rights are infringed upon. Saddening to note, they are met with police officials who are evidently not equipped by the Basic Police Development Learning Programme to efficiently handle matters of rape and domestic violence - especially when it is a man reporting.

Based on raw data collected from dialogues and social media where people often resort to for help, the SAPS are more likely than not to tell victims to "go back and sort it out as a family" placing them back in dangerous situations. In cases of violated Protection Orders, they are less likely to act for unbeknownst reasons.

It is important that they are subject to mandatory Gender-Based Violence training/workshops/dialogues delivered by civil organisations exposed to this issue on a daily basis. The aim is to sensitise them to the depth of the scourge being faced by the country. Perpetrators are less likely to have their day in court if the first point of contact (SAPS) was anything but helpful, & statistics will remain unreliable because victims do not see the point of the process.
