BGSU Needs A Grief Support Group

BGSU Needs A Grief Support Group
The Issue
My father passed away a week before the spring semester started at BGSU. When classes started, I was feeling overwhelmed, and isolated and lacked the motivation to participate in my classes. I reached out to the counseling center to inquire about a grief support group on campus. BGSU does not offer a grief support group to the students. The absence of grief resources for individuals who are in need is concerning. Support groups are beneficial for numerous reasons: individuals feel less isolated, judged, and experience reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. Moving through the journey of grief while being a student in college is more challenging than most know. Grief makes people have difficulty concentrating, unable to control their emotions, more prone to irritation, and have less motivation to complete daily tasks, including self-care: like showering and eating a proper diet. Grief is taxing on one’s mind and body. Students should have a safe environment that is comprised of people who understand the pain they are experiencing. BGSU students who are grieving should have access to a free and supportive coping mechanism to help them process their grief. I encourage you to sign this petition.
