To All Mountain Creek Residents and Quarry Petition Supporters

Somewhat unexpectedly, the Commissioners voted this afternoon to Deny the application (2026-0100) to rezone about five acres at 1123 Mountain Creek (directly across from the Oxfords) for a four story fifty-plus unit subsidized senior apartment complex

The RPA Staff recommended denying the application and thus enforcing the 2023 Corridor Study's recommendation prohibiting rezoning for increased density. Thanks to RPA Staff Director Brian Schults and Executive Director Karen Rennich for enforcing the Study. Additional thanks to our City (Chip Henderson) and County (Chip Baker) Representatives for influencing this outcome. And special thanks to the contingent from the Oxfords and elsewhere for their attendance today, to all residents who addressed objections to RPA, and to Oxford's HOA President Ralph Noble for speaking well to the heart of the matter.

Our County Mayor Weston Wamp and City Mayor Tim Kelly were in attendance to officially appoint new Commision Chairman Joe Smith. Joe Smith has been in a leadership position in local education and is independent of building.

Later this afternoon I traded messages with Chip Henderson. If the developer does not withdraw his application (as Chip expects), Chip will still be requesting a show of support at City Council on September 8. Please leave the date open. More information will follow.

I believe we will successfully stop this case from becoming a precedent but also expect that we will be tested again eventually. Thanks again to all for the demonstration of continued unity!
