Beyond the Cage: Silent Suffering of Paws and Claws

The Issue

Speak for those who can’t; STOP Animal Cruelty NOW!

watch: NO ANIMAL DESERVES CRUELTY!!!!!

Animals are lovable beings who require specific needs to maintain them, in order for them to live comfortably. Animal cruelty is the term used to describe bodily harm done to an animal and the harm it causes leaves the victim with long-term health problems. The reason why we have laws for this is to spread awareness and to stop the inhumanity to the different animals; one example of this law is the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, which is RA 8485, it aims to protect the welfare of animals that forbids the act of cruelty to animals, such as killing, torture, and maltreatment. In order to protect the well-being of animals, animal welfare regulations also govern their handling, transportation, and sale. Penalties for violators of the law include fines and jail imprisonment. Abuse can occur in various ways, it can nevertheless occur from minor, seemingly innocent, or even well-intentioned actions. It is also not just by hitting, abusing animals but also turning them to a delicacy, there was even a “dog eating festival”, which luckily got banned. According to the World Animal Foundation Org., Asia has the highest rate of animal cruelty. Furthermore, compared to the other parts of the world, Asia lacks animal cruelty laws, making it one of our main reasons why we are starting this advocacy.

BENEFICIARIES

Pet owners

Pets significantly enhance their owners' emotional well-being, as research shows that pet ownership can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. Furthermore, laws that protect animals from cruelty not only ensure the safety of these pets but also improve the emotional health of their owners, leading to increased happiness and fulfillment. These protections create a healthier environment for pet owners. According to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), “When communities protect animals from cruelty, they enhance the human-animal bond, ensuring that pets receive the care and respect they need, which ultimately enriches the lives of everyone involved.” In addition, these laws and advocacy efforts promote a culture of responsible pet ownership, benefiting both pets and their owners. With these protections in place, pet owners can feel assured that their animals are safe in their communities, recognizing that society values their well-being. This sense of security lessens fears of harm and strengthens the bond between pets and their owners. Moreover, animal protection laws increase awareness of cruelty issues, enabling pet owners to take legal action against those who mistreat animals and seek assistance from authorities when necessary. Additionally, pet owners can deepen their understanding of proper animal care and become advocates for their pets and stray animals that face harm or cruelty. They have the potential to create organizations and initiatives dedicated to animal protection. By actively combating animal cruelty, pet owners help foster a safer and healthier community where pets are cherished as valued family members. Ultimately, this not only enhances the welfare of the animals but also supports the mental health of their owners.

Veterinarians

According to Dr. Justine Lee “Our goal is to preserve quality of life and alleviate pain while making sure that we work with our pet owners as best we can to help them care for their pets”. As we all know, veterinarians are the physicians of animals and are in charge of providing proper care, diagnosis, and treatment for pets that have suffered bodily injury. Initially, veterinarians play a crucial role in investigating and conviction of the cases, as they possess specific knowledge that may help authorities with anything starting from conducting a thorough necropsy to investigating the crime scene in acquiring medical necessary proof and giving clinical records to outline the animal's health. Veterinary professionals will no longer be needing to extensively examine the bodies of the animals to acquire information about their experienced suffering once the problem of animal cruelty becomes more widespread, and when the numbers of cases in this issue eventually decreases. Through taking the lead in raising awareness, preventing cruelty to animals, and influencing people, veterinarians can also benefit from this advocacy through finding fulfilment and satisfaction in their own career through the feeling that their voices are being heard, about their concern on the increasing number of animal cruelty cases all over the world. Furthermore, strengthening and expanding their relationships and connections with the various organizations from all over the country and the world that can help them provide assistance and resources, could lead them to have extended opportunities in their field.

Government

Through this advocacy, the government can become aware of the issue of animal cruelty and subsequently establish stronger laws and regulations to address the brutality and torture of animals, ensuring the safety and well-being of pets whilst defending their independence and rights. Local government units (LGUs) and animal welfare organizations can collaborate on informational campaigns and advocacy efforts that promote adopting stray animals and teach people how to reduce the number of stray animals in the community by offering affordable neutering procedures. Moreover, the government can join assets and knowledge to develop holistic animal care initiatives by collaborating with NGOs, vets, and community-based organizations, and volunteer groups. Volunteering, workshops, and adoption events promote community engagement and strengthen social connections while increasing awareness of animal rights. Governments should establish animal control agencies and shelters that focus on rescuing and rehoming abused animals, collaborating with organizations like the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) to enhance these initiatives. These efforts also include educating the public about responsible pet ownership and managing stray populations. Animal welfare support can stimulate local economies by driving demand for veterinary services and pet supplies, which creates jobs and improves residents' quality of life. A strong enforcement program is essential, offering specialized training for police and animal control officers on animal welfare laws and cruelty investigations. Analyzing data on animal cruelty cases can help identify trends and enhance enforcement strategies. In summary, effective animal protection benefits the entire community. Preventing abuse safeguards both animals and people, fostering a compassionate culture. Protecting animals not only improves their welfare but also contributes to healthier, safer neighborhoods. Governments should take the initiative in advocating for animal protection by enforcing laws and partnering with dedicated organizations.
