The Issue

⚠️ To clarify: We are NOT fighting the City of San Antonio or its residents.

The Issue: The City of San Antonio introduced this fee because Bexar County isn't paying enough to cover unincorporated residents.

Our Goal: We want Bexar County to use our county tax dollars to pay the city fairly so our families can have free library cards.

The Target: We are taking this issue straight to the Bexar County Commissioners Court, not the city. We just want our county taxes to work for us

*

We are the residents of unincorporated Bexar County in San Antonio, and we need our county leaders to stop a new educational barrier hitting our families.

Recently, the City of San Antonio implemented a mandatory $30-per-person annual fee for non-city residents to use the San Antonio Public Library system.

While city residents fund their library system through municipal property taxes, unincorporated residents (in areas like 78239, 78245, 78254, 78261, 78109, and 78252) pay taxes to Bexar County instead. Without local city councils to negotiate services, Bexar County serves as the primary representative responsible for securing these regional resources.

We demand that Bexar County utilize our existing tax dollars to establish a fair Interlocal Agreement with the city or directly cover the $30 fee, ensuring our families and children are not priced out due to a governmental dispute. Please sign to urge County Judge Peter Sakai and the Commissioners Court to take action!

“Good morning, I am the Director of BiblioTech, Bexar County's all-digital public library. Commissioner Rodriguez' office forwarded your e-mail regarding the $30 fee newly imposed by the San Antonio Public Library. I hope to address, to the extent that I am able, some of the concerns you've shared. First, thank you for sharing your concerns about the $30 fee for San Antonio Public Library services. I appreciate your frustration. Libraries open doors to literacy, learning, opportunity, and connection, and, at Bexar County, we believe those doors should remain open to everyone, free of charge. The City of San Antonio established this fee. Bexar County does not control the City’s library budget or its fee decisions. Our commitment to expanding access to library services remains strong. Families depend on libraries as places where children discover a love of reading, students find help, and adults gain skills and resources they need. All Bexar County residents continue to have free access to BiblioTech, our all-digital public library. Its robust collection includes e-books, audiobooks, movies, music, language instruction, and personal and professional development courses. BiblioTech branches also offer children’s spaces, programs for all ages, study areas, maker’s spaces, public computers, and knowledgeable staff ready to help. These resources are all available at no cost. Visit bibliotech.org to register, explore the collection and download books instantly. BiblioTech’s Digital Navigators can also provide personal assistance in person or by phone. Thank you for speaking up about an issue that matters to so many families. BiblioTech shares your belief that access to libraries is essential to a strong community and we look forward to serving you.
