Better Recycling for a Cleaner Future

The Issue

Hi, my name is Abigail Field, and I am 9 years old. I care a lot about the Earth, animals, and what the world will be like when I grow up. I’ve learned a lot about trash and landfills over the years and it makes me worried to think about how much we throw away.

A lot of the things we put in the trash could be recycled instead. When recyclable items go to landfills, it wastes materials and can hurt the environment. Recycling helps keep our planet cleaner and saves energy.

In our community, recycling can be confusing and sometimes hard to do. There are not always enough recycling bins in public places, and not everyone knows what can be recycled. Also, some things like plastic bags, glass, and bottle caps are not accepted at our recycling center, even though they can be recycled in other places. I think if we could recycle more kinds of items, we could keep more trash out of landfills.

I believe our city and county can make recycling better by adding more recycling bins, teaching people more about how to recycle, offering curbside recycling (even just to those like the elderly who it’s harder to go to the recycling center) and allowing more items to be recycled. Even small changes could make a big difference.

Other places have worked hard to improve their recycling, and it has helped them send less trash to landfills. I think our community can do a better job too.

I want to help take care of the Earth so it stays clean and safe for kids like me and for the future. Please support stronger recycling efforts in our city and county.

Thank you for reading and for helping protect our planet!

As a parent, I’m proud of my child for caring about the environment and wanting to help make our community better. This idea came from her heart and her concern for the future. Thank you for taking the time to listen to a young voice that wants to make a positive difference.
