Better Protect Animals in Canadian Testing Laboratories

Better Protect Animals in Canadian Testing Laboratories
The Issue
As we enter the new year, millions of animals are still used in laboratories for chemical development, pharmaceuticals, and scientific research across the country. These animals are forcibly subjected to constant agony, confinement, and treatment that would otherwise be illegal when directed towards pets in the home. As of 2026, Canada does not have any enforceable laws regulating this type of research.
Excluding the recent ban of animal testing in cosmetics, Canadian oversight is not required and the public has an extremely limited access to information regarding how many animals are used, the procedures they being are subjected to, their quality of life, and whether alternatives are considered.
Animals used in labs are unable to consent and more often than not suffer unnecessarily, without gaining anything for themselves. Modern alternatives such as computer models and human cell testing exist but are underfunded and under promoted.
So we call on Canada to:
- Expand the bans on animal testing where possible.
- Enforce a federal law requiring mandatory oversight and reports regarding any and all animal testing laboratories.
- Increase funding aimed at cruelty free testing methods to replace animal use wherever possible.
Despite the common misconception, ensuring the safety of animals does not mean holding back the advancement of science. By investing in alternatives to animal testing, expanding laws, and increasing transparency, we can still make strides in the advancement of science while also preserving and increasing the quality of animal lives. Lets do better.
