UPDATED MANIFESTO: A NATIONAL ISSUE

After starting my locally-targeted campaign, I soon realised that surgeries across England face the same pressure as my own Medical Centre. Patients can't get through, are on hold for increasing lengths of time, can't pre-book appointments and only have access to emergency service. Staff who are doing their best are receiving abuse from disgruntled patients and it isn't fair on them or us. I say, 'enough is enough'. Time to make a stand and show the NHS we care.

ORIGINAL PETITION MANIFESTO BELOW

IS BURTON LATIMER'S NEW CLAIM TO FAME HAVING THE WORST RATIO OF GPs TO PATIENTS IN THE WORLD?

Burton Latimer desperately needs more GPs and better access to make same day and pre-booked appointments to both doctors and nurses.

New housing developments have transformed the feel and size of our community. The North Northamptonshire Joint Core Strategy committed to add 1,180 new dwellings to the town's existing 3,200 houses between 2011-31. This figure increased in 2020 to 1,279.

As of the 2011 census, our population was 7,449, rising to an estimated 9,788 in 2019. We will surely top 10,000 when the 2021 census is published. That's at least a 33% increase in population, but there is still just one general practice and no local dentist services.

We face a situation where residents cannot get through to the surgery despite hundreds of attempts. When they do, they regularly find themselves in queues of 15 or more and are 'lucky' if it takes just 30 minutes on hold. Some regularly spend well over an hour to be told there are no appointments and to try again tomorrow. It's frustrating for everyone, not least the staff in the surgery who are undoubtedly trying their best. Their health services have always been excellent, but getting appointments now is almost impossible.

I know it's not just Burton Latimer. The UK has the second lowest number of doctors in leading European nations relative to its population, according to research for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). That's based on 2.8 doctors per 1,000 people compared with an average of 3.5 doctors across the OECD (second only to Poland).

According to its website, there are six GPs at Burton Latimer Medical Centre. Assuming they are all full-time, based on a 10,000 population, that's 0.6 doctors per 1,000 people - that would give us the worst rate in the world! (Less than India's 0.8 ratio).

Now, I could be wrong, as I don't know how many people are registered with the Medical Centre or whether they have additional temporary staff. But still...they and us need help urgently.

Help make a difference. Sign this petition and share/log your experiences, so we can make NHS England and MP Philip Hollobone aware of how bad things are. The Medical Centre needs our support and we all deserve better!
