Fix Fallout 76 and it’s broken trade system.

Fix Fallout 76 and it’s broken trade system.

The Issue

It’s been nearly three years since Fallout 76 was first launched. It has seen many ups and downs in that time. Everything from massive bugs to duplication methods. Despite its very rough launch many of the original players have stuck with it. Most of us still see the potential this game has, especially since the recent updates. The game is now in a fairly good place, it’s getting regular updates, new items, new effects, and new factions.
But despite all of this recent progress there is still a rather large issue that has been plaguing the game since launch, one that is fairly unique given the fact it was launched as a online multiplayer game. That issue is the lack of a proper item for item trade menu and character transfer system.
Right now, if you get a new weapon or armor piece that is perfect for one of your other characters you will have an extremely difficult time transferring that item to a different character on the same account as the game does not have a proper means of safely moving items. This issue is further complicated by the fact that many newer items are account locked, which means they cannot be transferred, traded, sold, or dropped to anyone. Not even your other characters on the same account. If you wish to move anything from a single weapon, armor piece, plan, or just caps (the in game currency) the. You must rely on a trusted friend or get a courier from one of the many courier groups on Facebook or Reddit.
This is a completely inefficient system. There’s no reason at this stage in the game we cannot simply move our items between our own characters on the same account.
This also ties into the even bigger issue of there not being a safe means of trading items with other players outright. If I wished to trade my rifle for another persons then I must again recruit a third party courier or take the risk of having my item stolen by setting mine for zero caps and hope the other person does the same, in many cases the other person will just take the item and run off without consequence.
This has lead to a rash of players having many of their best items stolen. Many of the victims of these scams end up leaving the game permanently out of frustration. Meanwhile the person that took said item will later sell it for real world cash on sites such as gameflip, which only further encourages them to continue the practice as they stand to actually make a profit from it.
The lack of this one simple game mechanic is the root cause of 90%+ of the drama within the Fallout community. If we had a proper means to trade items we wouldn’t need to rely on couriers, scammer lists, or risk losing anything. What we’re asking for here is nothing extreme or ground breaking, it’s a basic mechanic that every major online rpg has. Even Elder Scrolls online, another online multiplayer game made by the same developer has an excellent trade system. There’s no reason we shouldn’t have one either.
