Please return Snitz Snider Memorial Stadium to the citizens of Bessemer!

The Issue

During the summer and fall of 2016, the decision was made to sale Snitz Snider Memorial Stadium in Bessemer, AL. The stadium, originally known as Bessemer Stadium, was built in the 1920s by the city. The stadium has been used to host many different events including citywide revivals, a presentation of the 'Sound of Music', and hundreds dressed in pioneer clothing to celebrate the city's 75th birthday!

But, the reason why Snitz Snider means so much to those who grew up in Bessemer is because of team and school pride. The first football game was held on the corner of 4th Ave and 9th Street in November 1935 and these games continued until November 2009. Bessemer High School fought on this field to win six state championships. Jess Lanier High School won the state championship in 1990. Four different alumni groups have called this stadium home: Bessemer, Jackson S. Abrams, Carver, and Jess Lanier High Schools. This doesn't include the junior high school, little league, and semi-pro football teams. Several future NFL players have suited up here throughout their youth, including one Heisman trophy winner. Hundreds of students have walked across the field to receive their diploma!

In 2010, Bessemer City High School and adjoining sports complex was completed and Snitz Snider has seen very minimal use with the exception of little league and semi-pro games until 2015. It would be a tragedy for the stadium to continue to be neglected and remain closed. Especially, in light of knowing that the city government gifted the school system with its stadium. So the purpose of this petition is clear: Please return the stadium to the community you serve, its rightful owners. The best use for this property would be to be used by the people of Bessemer. The citizens would love to clean up our stadium and find various new ways to utilize her!
