Petition updatePreserve Bermuda Recreational Land PetitionRiddell's Bay: NEW Milestone of over 700 Supporters to protect recreational land in Bermuda

Riddell's Bay Members Committee

May 18, 2018
We have reached a new milestone of 701 people (former RBGCC members, lawyers, corporate executives, athletes, residents, visitors, to name a few) that have signed, and are in support of, the very important petition to save and protect recreational land in Bermuda.
As you can see in the IMAGE attached, the new owners of Riddell's Bay golf course (Castile Holdings who purchased the large property for a low price after it was placed in liquidation) have recently applied- to the Department of Planning- to split the 91 acres of recreational land (Riddell's Bay golf course area) into TWO HALVES. As you can see in this image, Lot A is 49 acres of land to the east of Riddell's Bay Road and Lot A1 has another 42 acres, including valuable waterfront areas along the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th fairways etc. to the west of Riddell's Bay Road. Riddell's Bay Road is the dividing line of the two "lots" that they have applied to "subdivide" with the Department of Planning. There are some very unclear motives and words being used in the attempt to subdivide this large area of protected, recreational property (AKA the golf course). However, we can confirm that their application to do so is FACT and is on record, and viewable at the Department of Planning.
Experts agree that although the new owner is using the words "Boundary Adjustment" by tying in a small, undeveloped Residential lot on Fairways Road with their application to subdivide, it seems that this is possibly a 'smoke and mirrors' attempt to then apply for Residential 2 zoning for at least the adjoining 42 acres that they have linked it to, as lot A1. Words and descriptions appear to be purposely confusing and buried in the details of their planning applications. No further explanations of their motives have been given, other than their initial presentations to residents more than a year ago, which clearly showed at least 17 acres of waterfront lots marked to be sold off, in addition to selling the clubhouse (a protected, historical landmark building).
The supporters of this petition (more than 700 people/families/esteemed members of our community) do NOT seek to profit in any way from their attempt to prevent the destruction of some of Bermuda's very last green, recreational land. However, the new owners DO seek to gain millions of dollars, if permission is granted, by selling large one acre+ lots for the building of houses. The 'nature reserve' myth is merely the leftover, unbuildable areas that either flood, or are not desirable due to the location. The "nature reserve' areas are made up of already protected mangroves, in some cases. Folks, the FACT is, Castile Holdings did not pay roughly $7.5 million dollars for 90 acres of land, a large clubhouse and other property to give Bermuda a "nature reserve". They have investors in this property that have "likely" been promised a "big return" on investment, otherwise why would anyone put money into the 90 acre property? it seems logical.
Who has Bermuda's best interest at heart? Those that seek to protect, or those who seek to profit? Please support us in our efforts to save this recreational land for future generations. Please support us in our efforts to stop a legal precedent from being set that would then allow for any sports club, park, golf course, recreational area to be sold off and built upon for money. Bermuda does not need any more houses, nor does it need any more concrete, tarmac, waste, trash, overusage. We need open, green, recreational land now more than ever. This is based on facts. Remaining silent is not an option because there is too much at stake for us all.
You can request the file at the Department of Planning to see the facts in person. You can write letters to your government representatives to implore them not to allow this to happen. You can write letters to the Department of Planning, telling them of your objection. YOU CAN make a huge difference to Bermuda's future.
Please help us make a difference, for the right reasons. 21 square miles is tiny, we are all in this together. Profiteering off the little bit of green, recreational space Bermuda has left is simply wrong and unacceptable, in our view. 90 acres can make us or break us. This is the largest amount of green, recreational space left. SAVE RIDDELLS BAY
