In response to the concerns - the deputy superintendent sent the following form letter to all those who emailed. Please share and boost this petition as it seems like a done deal which is unfortunate.
Hello, and thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns with District administrative staff and the Board of Education and I am responding on their behalf.
Every spring District and building administrators review staffing and class sizes as we plan for the following year. That process always includes scrutiny on class numbers, the ability to collapse a grade level, teacher retirements across the District and the overall budget. We have been fortunate with smaller class sizes over the last number of years in upper elementary classrooms. Many of our sections are sized where collapsing them is not an option.
When decisions are made to collapse sections in our schools, we consider a few things.
We look at class sizes, and if the numbers of students in 3rd-5th grade classes can collapse into a smaller number of sections without going above contractual guidelines.
We look at grade level class sizes across the District to see if other schools have similar numbers.
We also look at the District’s general budget, funding from the State and whether we need to make adjustments to maintain a balanced budget.
Over the past three years, we have successfully collapsed sections at Burton and Pattengill and now this coming year at Angell. While this might be difficult news for some, the good news is that all teachers will have a job next year with the Berkley School District. We also have full confidence in our teachers that they can have a successful year with their future students.
Sincerely, Chris Sandoval
