Berkeley should offer remote or hybrid OPTION for all students as cases surge
Berkeley should offer remote or hybrid OPTION for all students as cases surge
Why this petition matters
•The recent message we received from the UHS assistant vice chancellor indicates that the university is not planning to change its stance on in-person instruction as omicron cases continue to surge.
•"the public health benefits of in-person instruction outweigh the risks — even amidst this surge". This claim is incredibly self-centered and fails to consider not only the opinion of students who believe otherwise but also the many uncertainties about COVID, such as the traumatic long covid symptoms.
•As many professors refuse to post recorded lectures when we go in-person, students who test positive are incentivized to attend lectures while being sick so they don't miss lectures.
•COVID test is not even a mandatory requirement for students to return on campus. Cases are likely going to skyrocket once everyone returns to campus and resumes in-person activities.
•The judgment of whether COVID is risky or not should be made on an individual level. Students who value the in-person learning experience over the risk of catching covid should have a choice, but so do the students who don't consider the in-person learning experience to be a crucial aspect during this uncertain time. Therefore a hybrid option makes a lot of sense, in which the class can be offered and completed both online and in-person.
