Hi friends!
Since we reached 20,000 supporters last evening I have refrained from commenting further because, quite frankly, I didn’t know what to say. It’s a massive undertaking to field this issue, and just like many of you, I am still emotionally connected to the Isla Vista shootings. Please bear with me and Ian as we navigate the waters. We never expected our petition to gain so much momentum, and sincerely hope that we are able to represent you all in the best way possible.
After gaining some clarity, consulting legal + PR experts, and speaking honestly with friends, here is where we stand on the issue, and where we would like to head.
1. This petition does not seek to personally attack the producers, directors, cast, or crew. It is simply an outcry against a film that we see as highly insensitive, untimely, and extremely hurtful to the families + friends of the victims. That being said, we understand the filmmakers right to artistic expression. Many commenters have raised the issue of censorship and the 1st amendment right to free speech. As stated in the original petition, we are seeking to educate the filmmakers about the seriousness behind gun violence tragedies, and hope they reconsider the untimely public release of their film.
2.With that being said, our team has been in contact with university lawyers and employees to determine if the filmmakers have obtained the proper permission to film on campus and feature UCSB students in their trailer. This issue was brought to our attention by several supporters who saw their face in the trailer and had not granted Shaun Hart or Berger Bros permission to film them. Thank you SO much for your help and attention to detail. Berger Bros Entertainment and Shaun Hart have their absolute right to free speech, but do not have the right to film individuals without their knowledge or consent. Should it be the case that they have not gotten the proper permits or permission, UCSB and a legal team will take the appropriate actions.
3. Our petition has gone viral. With over 22,000 supporters in 48 hours, both the petition and the film have gained massive coverage on media outlets. Since the beginning we have worried about the publicity our petition would give the film, and if it would make the project more successful. It is a tricky issue, one we weren’t quite sure how to handle. We decided to move forward and hope that in our case, the publicity would inspire the filmmakers to reconsider the release, and spur action against the film. This petition has gained national attention and will be covered with or without our contribution. We believe it is best to be the ones writing the narrative. Again, it is a difficult decision to make, one with both positives and negatives. We hope you’ll continue to support us and understand our reasons for proceeding in this way.
Please continue to tell us your thoughts on the issue, and where you would like us to head with our petition. We are so grateful for this incredible community, and can never begin to thank you enough for your support.
With love and light,
Kate + Ian
