Black Bentley started this petition to Bentley University

Dear Bentley Board of Trustees, President’s Cabinet, Faculty, Staff, Students, and Alumni,

It has been over three months since George Floyd’s death sparked a global outpouring of emotion and action. In that time, our black community members have endured unimaginable pain. They are reliving their own memories, witnessing horrific responses to their protests to live, and using this historical tipping point to create real justice, one that has never existed in our human history. It often takes a crisis to bring about just change, and 2020 is no exception. In that spirit, this letter outlines implementable changes that must be made by Bentley University. The Black at Bentley community (over 200 contributors to these demands) has come together numerous times to thoughtfully and inclusively address systemic, overt, and implicit racism at Bentley University. To that end, Black at Bentley is qualified to provide this list of necessary changes. This letter will contain the most immediate and urgent list of demands. We expect these demands to be taken with the respect, care, and personal attention that Bentley values and strives to emulate.

For context, Black at Bentley is composed of Black, multicultural, and white alumni that extend from present day to 1990. We have received extensive and thorough input from other members of the community including incoming students, current students, parents, faculty, and staff that touch all parts of the Bentley experience. As we are sure you have seen, Black at Bentley has collected the stories and grievances from our beloved Bentley community. On display are just some of the many egregious forms of racism that we, as individuals and a collective, have encountered during our time at Bentley. It was unacceptable then and is finally widely understood as morally and physically reprehensible.

With all that said, we care about our Bentley community. We care about the future of Bentley and its future students. We did not endure these wrongs to watch Bentley buckle under the weight of its historical inability to address racism. To that end, we want to help and are requiring the following to move all of us in the right direction.

We require a response to these demands by September 14th, 2020 to blackatbentley@gmail.com
