Retract Your Disgusting and Epistemophobic Hate-petition Against Kevin Williamson
This petition had 68 supporters
Change.org recently published a disgusting and epistemephobic petition titled "Retract Your Digusting and Transphobic Op-Ed on Laverne Cox." In this embarassing petition, 'professionally offended attention-seeker' Benjamin O'Keefe repeatedly calls upon a newspaper to retract a piece of published opinion journalism, and demands that a writer recant his views.
Mr. O'Keefe seems to be laboring under the misapprehension that his feeling upset by words is more important than a robust culture of free expression. His supporters, who are about as witless as you'd expect from a site such as this one, go one further, a contributor suggesting that "the article is hate speech" and that "hate speech isn't covered by the 1st amendment." This is a transconstitutional hate-statement and represents violence against the existing order. This puts those who rely upon the document for their protection—some of the weakest in our society—at risk. Small acts of violence to it are soon turned into larger ones.
Retract the petition, Mr. O'Keefe. Retract and repent! And if you cannot, then hie thee to a monastery that you might live out your days in quiet isolation, with only the prison guards and men in white coats to keep you and your troubled soul in comfort.
