We want to require all officers and staff in Bend PD to go through racial bias screening before being hired by the police force. In addition to this, we want ALL officers and staff to complete racial bias training and de-escalation training in addition to the typical police training. This will help to combat the systemic racism that lives within the justice system. It will make the local change to hold the Bend Police Department accountable for bias and discrimination against black people and all minorities. Many people don't believe racism exists in Central Oregon, but it does and it lives in huge ways. If you ask almost any black person if they have faced oppression in Bend, the answer will almost always be yes. The discrimination of people of color in Central Oregon roots back almost 100 years with the KKK, and we now have the power to abolish it.
