In 2017, 14-year-old black student Deshaun Michael Isaiah Adderley was racially harassed at Summit High School until he took his own life.

In September of 2017, he was one of the few black students attending Summit High School and was targeted and bullied by ten different students for the three months preceding his death. This harassment consisted of verbal abuse, but also physical, as Deshaun was pulled out of another student's car. He was also pressured into a fight that occurred in the school bathroom, which was filmed and spread on social media. He received death threats from the students and was told "he would be put on his knees and made to beg for his life".

While this was happening, Summit was aware of this situation as both Deshaun and another student had reported it, but they took no action to protect him. The school was also aware of the fight and had put Deshaun on a 'watch list" but failed to inform his parents of the problem at hand, and didn't tell them after he had reached out to a school counselor.

Even now, his name isn't mentioned in exchanges about suicide and racial harassment at Summit. In a recent email written by Principal McDonald, he claimed the school was trying to foster an environment of "anti-racism, justice, and equity". If this is the case, every student at Summit High School needs to know Deshaun Adderley's story. While a plaque might seem like a small symbol for such a huge and complex problem, it has the potential to open a conversation about Summit's recent history of bullying and remind students that racism is a very present problem at school, making them think twice before they decide to use racial slurs or target other students.

While the world is taking action to fight racial inequality, it is important to start by looking at our own communities and the injustices around us. This plaque would be the first of many steps to face Summit's issue with racism. It is unacceptable to claim to be a school striving for racial equality while still putting a taboo on Deshaun Adderley's name and story.
