Stop Adani
The issue
What is the Adani Mine?
It is a proposed coal mine that will be built inland of the great barrier reef
If built, it will be one of the largest coal mines in Australia
It will cost an estimated 2 billion and Adani Mining says it will be self-funded
It will produce an estimated 60 million tonnes of coal a year
Impact: Damaging indigenous land
The proposed site is land that currently belongs to the Wangan and Jagalingou people
The site will impact their sacred land and waters taking away some of their opportunities on earning money
The indigenous people currently have native claims to the land, the government could take the land away from them if they approve the mine, meaning their land might be damaged without their permission
The mining site is near the Doongmabulla, one of the world's largest untouched desert oases and the mine could damage this area
Impact: Environmental impacts
An extra 500 ships will be allowed to pass through the Great Barrier Reef for imports and exports. These ships could damage the already fragile reef
Carbon emissions from burning and extracting the coal could be catastrophic to the reef, which is sensitive to changes in temperature
Internal CSIRO correspondence reveals the science agency was pushed to formally accept the Federal Government's approval of Adani's water plans in a single afternoon.
Freedom of information laws exposes further discrepancies between what the Government said about the assessment of Adani's environmental plans, and what actually occurred.
Internal CSIRO correspondence explicitly shows the agency went out of its way to avoid giving any categorical scientific advice on Adani's plans
There are endangered species in this area: the Yakka Skink, the ornamental snake, and the black-throated finch
Particularly with the finch, the proposed site is one of the last homes of this endangered bird
This project will also kill many other animals
Impact: Water usage and carbon emissions
As it stands, Adani has signed an agreement giving them unlimited access to underground water
Adani estimated that they would use 12 billion litres of water each year
With Queensland already drought-pone, the mine could pollute groundwater relied upon for livestock and crops
It is estimated that during its operation period, the mine will add 4.6 billion tonnes of carbon to the atmosphere
If this mine is built, it will open up the Galilee Basin
The Galilee Basin is one of the world's largest untouched coal deposits
Opening it up will allow several other mines to be built
Is the Adani coal mine a good idea?
There have been at least four separate reports of Adani breaking environmental law in India
In the town of Mundra, they operate a large coal-fired power plant
This project damages the environment, causes harm to local communities, and fails to comply with environmental regulations and development permits
They illegally cleared 75 hectares of mangroves, flattened sand dunes, dredged the ocean, and blocked waterways
Australia is trying to move away from coal yet it is building a mine that is not only going against that but effects a lot of people and the environment
81% of the public is supportive of renewable energy being the main energy source in Australia
65% of Australians are against the mine
It will kill many sea creatures living in water
The mine will cause immense damage towards the environment
It will destroy indigenous ancestral land, water and culture without consent
500 more coal ships will travel past the great barrier reef (GBR) causing pollution and introducing more invasive species
Getting access to 270 billion litres of water over 60yrs for free
Risk damaging aquifers in the Great Artesian Basin
Adding 4.6 billion tones of carbon pollution in our atmosphere
