Unqualified dog behaviorists

Unqualified dog behaviorists

The Issue

I work for a well known animal welfare charity. I am also studying with the British College of Canine studies level 4 dog behaviour practitioner. It has come to my attention that most of the dog behaviorists advertised in my area of ipswich; also suffolk ; also east anglia and all over the uk have no qualification. In fact because there is no legislation or regulation anyone can advertise and call themselves a canine behaviourist. This is a very serious subject and not one that should be ignored any further. Rehabilitation of dogs is extremely specialised and I believe its time to stop people advertising a service that they are not qualified to do. Would we take our pets to someone that claims to be a vet but has no qualifications? No we wouldn't. What we have to realise is that a dogs psychological health is just as important as his physical health. People that are claiming to be dog behaviorists that are not qualified can indeed do more damage to the dog psychologically which too often ends up with someone biten or the dog is euthanised. Working in management for a recognised animal welfare charity, I want to make a change and push for regulation and legislation so it becomes law for anyone who wishes to be a canine behaviourist to obtain qualification before they advertise a service. The unqualified people that do this are charging people in our community excessive amounts for a sevice to which they are not qualified to do. This takes advantage of vulnerable people in our community who are trying to do right by their pets.
